Merton Edward Hanks was born on March 12, 1968 in Dallas, Texas. Hanks attended Lake Highlands High School, where he was a district track and field champion. He went on to the University of Iowa, earning all-Big Ten honors at cornerback. However, at the NFL scouting combine, his 40-yard dashes were extremely slow, and he was not drafted until the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers in 1991.
Merton Hanks retired from the NFL after the 1999 season and has since worked for the National Football League. Hanks is currently Senior Manager and Director of Operations for the NFL. His responsibilities in that role range from college relations to approving fabrics for NFL jerseys. He had also worked with former Representative Jim Leach (R-Iowa) in the past few years to help propose a bill to ban Internet gambling within the United States.“I’m very excited to be joining the ESPN team. I hope to bring my passion and knowledge for the game as an analyst just as I did as a player,” Bruschi said in a statement. “I look forward to the national exposure of covering the entire league while also having the opportunity to stay close to my roots here with ESPNBoston.com.”
I’m beginning to think the NFL needs to open up a rehab facility for all the current and former players with addictions. The latest crack head to get popped for possession is former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith. He was pulled over on Wednesday afternoon and the Florida police found crack cocaine and marijuana in his car.
Smith, who played 10 seasons for Jacksonville, was pulled over on Interstate 95 in Jacksonville for excessive window tint on his 2009 Mercedes Benz, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper said.
The trooper reported that the inside of the car smelled like burnt marijuana. During a search, the trooper found crack cocaine, marijuana and a business card with powder cocaine residue in the car’s center console. So he was driving and getting high?
Smith’s abusing drugs is nothing new. In 2003 he was suspended for 4 games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. He then publicly acknowledged an addiction and spent several weeks in rehab.
Smith faces multiple drug charges, plus a charge of driving with a suspended license. He was being held at the Duval County Jail with no bond set. I’ll digress from commenting further. It’s obvious he needs my prayers vs. my criticism. Get well Jimmy.
